When I woke up

When I woke up

When I woke up this morning,
I closed my eyes again
And remembered what it felt like
to sleep next to you
As you sung me to sleep
across the weight of the room
To listen to you breathe in the darkness
To feel your body so close to mine
but out of reach
To touch your fingers just for a moment
In a strange slow dance in miniature
To open my eyes in the morning
And see you open yours
And the flood of warmth come over me
As you smiled at me
To order room service
And eat it in bed
And the sound of your daughter’s “I love you,”
sweeter still than all the rest.

When I woke up this morning
I closed my eyes again
And thought of you.
