Remember, I’m a child

Remember, I’m a child

January 26

With barefoot feet and a milk mustache,
I stand before you finally myself
Just a little girl who wants another milkshake
And to play in the dirt in the garden
Instead of going to school or doing chores.
Remember that when you wonder why
I burst into tears for no reason
And you kiss it to make it better.
Remember when I laugh when the hero
Dies in the movie and everyone else is in tears.
I’m not seeing what you see through your grown-up eyes, with your adult heart,
Knowing the right thing to say and do
Being appropriate and clear
Expressing your feelings and sharing your thoughts.
Remember I’m just a child.
Needing your guidance and protection
Because I don’t know anything
Except I like bare feet and pink milkshakes
And pancakes on Sunday nights
And warm blankets on a cozy couch
And not to be left alone.
